Sheepdogs, Inc. is born...
One afternoon while riding my motorcycle to meet friends at our favorite watering hole, The Irish Pub in Greenville, SC, I recalled the story of the sheep, the wolves, and the sheepdog. It's a story that has been around for years and even mentioned in a book by Lt. Col. David Grossman.
There's a quote from a man named Charles Grennel who penned a letter to a student at the University of Washington that has resonated with me for many years. The student felt that military veterans did not make good role models and protested against a statue of Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, a Medal of Honor recipient, being placed on her campus;
Then there are the sheepdogs and I'm a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf. If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the uncharted path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.
I believe a Sheepdog is one who cares for those not capable or willing to care for themselves. They put themselves in harms way not for glory or adulation, not for riches or fame, but because it is what they were chosen to do. A Sheepdog walks the perimeter, sniffing the breeze and raising his ears at the slightest sound. He knows the wolf is waiting for his chance to steal away one of his sheep, and he yearns for the battle that is inevitable.
The next time you see a Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coastie, or Cop, remind yourself; this is a hero that runs towards the sound of the gunfire while others are running away. It is his battle and he is going to fight it.
The products on SheepdogsInc.com allow Sheepdogs to recognize one another, and to let the sheep know that we are here. When you pass a person on the street and you see the Sheepdog shirt you know the person wearing it has your back. When you're behind a car with the Sheepdogs sticker in the window you can rest assured that the person driving will fight for your safety and freedom no matter your age, gender, political affiliation, religion, or color...no questions asked.
Fierce. Courageous. Loyal.
